Web-Based Communication

It's impossible to overstate the importance, reach, and convenience of the web to education. While its impact on instruction typically gets most of the attention, its role in communicating with stakeholders often gets overlooked.

Communication among parents, taxpayers, and educators has always been a crucial element of any effective educational strategy. All parties have to be on the same page, and so good communication is a key factor in reaching educational goals. In today’s environment, the school district web site is the lynch pin of an institution's overall communications strategy. Not so long ago, communications were essentially limited to phone calls, parent-teacher conferences, report cards, and the occasional note from the principal, which--not surprisingly--didn't always make it home. This model left a lot to be desired, for obvious reasons. The emergence of school web sites is changing all that. Parents and teachers can convene virtually. Parents no longer have to wait for school closings to be listed on the radio or television; they can proactively seek the information, without cluttering up a school's switchboard. Teachers can now post assignments online, so parents can better follow up. In addition to making grades and progress reports easier to distribute, these items also can be updated more frequently online, enabling better parent-teacher collaboration and allowing for easier "course correction" should improvement be necessary.
